Dua for the beginning of the prayer (Sahih Muslim 1703)

Hisn al-Muslim 16

(Allahumma rabba jibra-eel, wameeka-eel, wa-israfeel fatiras-samawati walard, AAalimal-ghaybi washshahadah, anta tahkumu bayna AAibadika feema kanoo feehi yakhtalifoon. ihdinee limakh-tulifa feehi minal-haqqi bi-ithnik, innaka tahdee man tasha-o ila siratin mustaqeem.)

(O Allah, Lord of Jibra-eel, Meeka-eel and Israfeel (great angles), Creator of the heavens and the Earth, Knower of the seen and the unseen. You are the arbitrator between Your servants in that which they have disputed. Guide me to the truth by Your leave, in that which they have differed, for verily You guide whom You will to a straight path.)

Context & meaning

A long address comes before any request. He is named Lord of three by name — Jibra-eel, Meeka-eel and Israfeel — then Creator of the heavens and the Earth, then Knower of the seen and the unseen. A statement follows rather than a request: You are the arbitrator between Your servants in that which they have disputed. Only then does the request arrive, and it is shaped by that statement — guide me to the truth in that which they have differed, by Your leave.

When & how to recite

The chapter places these words at the beginning of the prayer.

Reflection

Disagreement is named twice, first as something He arbitrates and then as the exact place guidance is asked for. The request is not that the dispute be settled, but that the speaker be guided within it.

About these notesThe notes above explain the wording of the supplication as it is translated on this page. They add no commentary, history or ruling beyond it.
