Yusuf Ali
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
✦ AI Explanation
The Bismillah opens 113 of the 114 surahs, establishing that every righteous act begins with Allah's name. The two divine attributes — ar-Rahman (mercy encompassing all creation) and ar-Rahim (special mercy for the believers) — place mercy at the very entry point of the Scripture.

Yusuf Ali
Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the Worlds.
✦ AI Explanation
This verse establishes that all praise belongs exclusively to Allah. The definite article in al-hamd signals totality — every form of praise. Rabb al-'alamin encompasses every dimension of creation, affirming His absolute sovereignty and unceasing care.

✦ AI Explanation
Repeating the names of mercy after the opening establishes that the entire Qur'an proceeds from divine mercy. Ar-Rahman and ar-Rahim share the same Arabic root but differ in scope — one universal, one particularly directed at the faithful.

Yusuf Ali
Master of the Day of Judgment.
✦ AI Explanation
After affirming Allah's mercy, the Qur'an introduces His absolute authority over the Day of Judgment. This balance — mercy first, then sovereignty — is deliberate: hope in Allah's mercy does not negate accountability; both must coexist in a believer's heart.

Yusuf Ali
Thee do we worship, and Thine aid we seek.
✦ AI Explanation
Here the surah shifts from description to direct address — speaking to Allah, not about Him. Placing the object before the verb in Arabic conveys emphasis and restriction: worship is for You, and no one else. This verse is the heart of Al-Fatihah.

Yusuf Ali

✦ AI Explanation
The surah closes by specifying what the straight path is: the path of those favored by Allah — the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous (An-Nisa 4:69). Anger and misguidance are left without attributed agent while favour is attributed directly to Allah — a beautiful subtlety of Quranic grammar reflecting divine mercy.

Al-Fatihah · 1:1 · Ibn Kathir
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Bismillah — Ibn Kathir explains that beginning with Allah's name is a declaration seeking His blessing and assistance. The one who says Bismillah acknowledges that all power belongs to Allah and their action is connected to Him.

The two names ar-Rahman and ar-Rahim are both derived from rahmah (mercy). ar-Rahman denotes the breadth of mercy encompassing all creation; ar-Rahim denotes the depth of mercy reserved for the believers on the Day of Judgment.

The scholars noted that Bismillah serves as both an opening and a blessing — whoever begins any righteous act with it begins in Allah's name, connecting it to His infinite power.

Tafsir

Bismillah — Ibn Kathir explains that beginning any act with Allah's name is a declaration of seeking His blessing. The one who says Bismillah acknowledges that all power belongs to Allah.

The combination of ar-Rahman and ar-Rahim establishes that mercy is the primary attribute through which Allah relates to His creation.
